OFC Welcomes New Team to League, while BCFC Bids Farewell to One
The Ontario Football Conference just got bigger with the addition of the Brampton Bears. The Bears have been accepted to begin play this upcoming 2010 season and it will mark their reentry into the CJFL since the Old Brampton Satelites team in the 1970's. This brings the total team count to seven in a league that was nearly defunct several years ago with only four squads taking the field. Brampton, Hamilton, and AKO are affiliates of the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the Canadian Football League. Meanwhile, out in the west coast. The British Columbia Football Conference has sadly lost a long standing member of their league. The Vancouver Trojans have withdrawn their team from future contests due to lack of funding. The team has merged with the South Surrey Rams and players from the Trojans are unavailable to other teams in that conference until March 1, 2010. Lack of funding is an ongoing issue for all teams of the CJFL and the AKO Fratmen would like to thank those who continue to support the program. If you believe in the mandate of the AKO Fraternity, please contact us for further information on how to become a supporter.

Walter Spencer Robinson Brings Grey Cup Home to AKO Clubhouse
Walter Spencer Robinson is no longer missing the Grey Cup. In fact, he’s had it close by his side while visiting Windsor . The linebacker for the Montreal Alouettes, who beat the Saskatchewan Roughriders 28-27 in the 2009 Grey Cup, brought the famed cup to the AKO Clubhouse on Wednesday January 7, 2010. Walter wanted to give back to the team that provided him with the skills and opportunity to succeed. He talked to a large crowd about his long journey to capture the legendary bauble of the Canadian Football League. “What came to my mind when we won, I had thought about all the hours I had spent training,” said Spencer Robinson, who played high school football at Forster and then junior with the Windsor AKO Fratmen of the Ontario Football Conference of the Canadian Junior Football League. “My six years in the league, so many seasons to just come up short so many times. Every team that I would go to, I would just miss it. I was with Saskatchewan (in 2004-05), missed it by two years. Then I went to Calgary (in 2006), missed it by two years. I went to Montreal (in 2008), and Calgary won it. I kept missing it. I said, ‘When’s my time coming?’ Then when I finally won it, it was very emotional.” He admitted that he has studied the historic names on the Grey Cup, people like Pro Football hall of famer Warren Moon and Lionel Conacher, who also won the Stanley Cup twice and was named Canada’s athlete of the half century in 1950. “You go down in history,” Spencer Robinson said. “I’ve looked at a lot of them. I was determined I was going to do all I could do to get my name on there and look what happened. We did it.” This provides Robinson with the pleasure of bringing a piece of history back to the City of Windsor that has provided him with the tools to excel at a sport that he loves so much. The AKO Fratmen would like to congratulate Spencer Robinson and the Montreal Alouettes on a fabulous season. Good Luck next year on your repeat attempt.

Ex-Fratmen Flexes Muscles at North American Power Lifting Championship.
23 year old Windsor native and Ex-Fratmen standout, Kelly Branton, got into power lifting 2 years ago and was virtually a nobody in the grand scheme of Power Lifting. He only competed in about 5 events, but he knew he had something special. He was always a strong kid growing up, in grade school he was a big kid, He played football in Highschool and always enjoyed lifting weights. His biggest attribute however, was the desire to win and be the best no matter the consequence. When you have the perfect combination of strength, desire and god given talent, it makes competing more interesting. The most recent competition was held in Miami and this is where he made his biggest accomplishments to date and as Branton describes, "The best thing he has ever done". Competing in the junior division (between 220-242 pounds), Branton set records in the squat lift (710 pounds), the bench press (506 pounds) and the dead lift (666 pounds) for an unprecedented 1,885-pound total. He was a runaway winner in the junior division and his performance also made him the men’s open champion where he earned a 13th record for total weight in that category. Branton said , What motivates him the most is knowing that, ‘If I don’t do this somebody else could beat me and I don’t want to lose.’” It’s that kind of drive that had Branton load 66 pounds on to his final dead lift in Miami. “I won the men’s open with that last dead lift,” he said. “I don’t know how I pulled it. I just know I hate losing. It’s a rare occasion when a junior can compete with the open lifters (age 23-39). At the end of the day, Branton won 8 medals and broke 13 records. this quite the feat for a newcomer and especially one from a little city known as Windsor. The reigning provincial and national champ, Branton will compete one last time as a junior this month in Ottawa. Then he will move on to the open division and eventually the world championships. Overall, pound for pound, he is slated to be the best lifter in Canada one day and one of the best in the world. The Fratmen organization would like to congratulate Kelly Branton and wish him the best on attaining his goal.
